Herstory

A ticketed event as part of the history festival, Come and join us for a conversation as we open the pages of this little cook book and reveal its touching stories, fascinating secrets and sparkling recipe gems and join us as we re imagine the creation of our community not in the hands of the men….but of the women.

Barossa Cookery Book as a political barometer

The cookbook contains quaint recipes for traditional dishes with a heavy focus on baked goods – cakes, biscuits and desserts. But it’s the recipes it doesn’t contain that are particularly fascinating. Join us as we explore the anti-German sentiment that prevailed in World War 1 and its effect on recipes and their inclusion.

Then listen as we outline the story of Tanunda’s Elizabeth Schrader and her compelling connection to the 1917 edition of the cookbook.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the conclusion of the session and you are invited to join us for a light afternoon tea to mingle and chat further.

Afternoon Tea: Elizabeth’s recipes of melting moments and coffee rolls. Tea and coffee will be available.

There will be three information sessions in total, with all three sessions starting with a brief outline of this iconic cookbook and its inception as a community fundraiser to support the establishment of a Soldiers Memorial Hall. The sessions will then take a deep dive into some of its more fascinating secrets. Each session will also shine a spotlight on historic recipe contributors and their stories as Barossa women and community members.

You can purchase tickets for one session, two or attend all three. If you would like to take advantage of the special pricing offer for all three sessions please purchase your tickets using that option in our shop. Ticket price per session - $30 which includes afternoon tea.
